1. 表示“发现，察觉，注意到”（v.）
notice, detect, spot, discover, observe, perceive,
notice （无意中）注意到
He noticed a woman in a black dress sitting across from him. 他看到有位黑衣女子坐在他的对面。
detect 发现，察觉（尤指不易察觉到的事物）
Many forms of cancer can be cured if detected early. 如果发现得早，许多癌症都可以治愈。
detect—detection n. 发现，侦察 — detective n. 侦探，警探
spot 发现，看出，认出，注意到（不易看到或只瞄了一眼的东西，没有notice正式）
It can be hard for even a trained doctor to spot the symptoms of lung cancer. 即使是训练有素的医生也很难看出肺癌的症状。
discover 发现，发觉（以前不知道的食物）
observe 【正式】观察到，注意到
perceive 【正式】察觉，发觉
Cats are not able to perceive color. 猫不能辨别颜色。

2. 表示“解雇”（v.）
fire, dismiss, remove, lay off
(1) fire 开除，解雇
I’ve just been fired from my job, and don’t know what to do. 我刚被解雇，不知道该怎么办。(fire sb. from sth.)
在英语书面语中，人们一般说someone is dismissed, 不说fired。因为fire显得不那么正式。
He was dismissed for being drunk. 他因醉酒而被开除。
(2) remove 指免除某人的职务，尤指罢免身居要职者。
Congress has the right to remove the President from office. 国会有权罢黜总统。
(3) lay off 指因为没有工作可做而解雇员工。
Millions of workers were laid off during the economic crisis. 经济危机期间，数百万工人被解雇。
3. 表示“显示，展现”（v.）
demonstrate, display, show, present, reveal
demonstrate 演示，示范；也可指表露出某种感情、能力或素质，作此义解时常可与 display 换用。
She has demonstrated/displayed an ability to meet deadlines. 她展示了如期完成任务的能力。
display 展示，陈列，常指将某物摆放在显眼之处；也指显露某种感情、态度或特质。
A newly unearthed bronze statue is displayed in the centre of the hall. 一座新出土的青铜雕像被放在大厅中央展示。
She displayed great interest when visiting the museum. 参观博物馆的时候，她表现出很感兴趣的样子。
present -presentation（以某种方式）展现，显示，表现
We’ll present the information using a chart. 我们将用图表来展示这些信息。
Three of the five patients presented with fever. 五位病人中有三位出现了发热的症状。
reveal 把之前隐藏起来的东西展现出来。
The curtain opened to reveal the grand prize. 大幕拉开，大奖展现在眼前。

这两个词都不用于进行时。
If you suspect a gas leak, do not strike a match or even turn on an electric light. 假如你怀疑有煤气泄漏，不要划火柴，甚至连电灯都不要开。
suspect, “怀疑”，尤指坏事可能属实或发生。在肯定句和否定句中如接从句均用 that 引导。I suspected that there was something wrong with the engine. 我怀疑发动机出了什么故障。
